I Loved My Life. Just Because It Was Mine.

Love Hurts

Trudis Percival survived a fist that knew where not to leave bruises, a sister who slept with her man then sold her land, and a body that suffered ten strokes and a broken hip, ignored by doctors. She does not want your pity. She wants you to know: love can bury you alive – but you can still dig your way out. This is her truth. Unflinching. Unbroken. Unforgettable.

About the Author

Trudis Percival

Trudis Percival was born Gertrud in post-war Germany. The nurses called her Trudis instead. The name stuck. So did her habit of surviving things that should have broken her.

She grew up in a single room with no bathroom. She joined a girls’ choir. She fell in love with a man who beat her and told her no one would see the marks. She married him anyway. She had two children. Then her own twin sister slept with her fiancé. Not once. Twice…

About the Book

Love Hurts

She was born a twin in post-war Germany. She survived a husband who beat her without leaving marks. She trusted a sister who slept with her fiancé, then later forced her to sell the home she built with her own hands. This is not a tragedy. This is a memoir of survival.

Love Hurts follows Trudis Percival from the rubble of 1950s Germany to the hills of Australia. Along the way, she loses her children to a legal system that offers no protection…

From Those Who Have Read It

Some cried. Some got angry. Some saw their own lives in these pages. Here is what they wanted to share.
I have a sister. We fight, but nothing like this. Reading what Trudis went through with her twin honestly made my stomach turn. The way Doris kept coming back into her life and destroying things over and over… I don't know how Trudis survived that. It made me look at my own family differently. This book stayed with me for weeks.

My mom was in an abusive relationship when I was a kid. Reading Trudis talk about how Achim would hit her but never leave marks… that hit way too close to home. She doesn't make herself a hero. She just tells you what happened. No drama, no excuses. Just facts. I cried a few times. But I also felt less alone.
